Title: Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor
House Affiliation: Slytherin
Blood Status: Half-Blood
This is Phillip Harris, your shiny new DADA professor. He's just arrived to take over for the previous prof, who retired (so to speak?) over the break. So far as anyone's been told, he was working in connection with the American Office of Aurors, had his cover blown, and was offered the newly open position at Hogwarts as a way of laying low. And in fairness, he's got the subject down ten times over (though whether or not he is equipped to teach it is another story).
His background is still in the works (and may ever be so), but to give some sense... His mother was an American Muggle, father a British wizard. Born in England, he spent much of his childhood traveling between the two countries, attended Hogwarts (Slytherin, thanks), then promptly broke away from his family and hightailed it to the States. Fell in with a shady crew/network and spent about ten years as a professional thief, typically working as "Mr. Pink" (a name originally received for an assignment). Taking jobs from magical folk and Muggles alike--as well as enacting a number of his own--he became highly skilled, and was doing well for himself when a rat outed him to the Aurors.
After the Aurors tracked him down (the encounter was unpleasant, to say the least, and bloody on both sides; Phil still has a large scar across his back), he was given two options: head to prison for life, or work in connection with the Aurors, taking assignments that required specialized information or were generally perilous. While it wasn't particularly appealing, he took the second. Spent several years in this manner, often working undercover, and gaining some level of tolerance if not trust from certain members of the Auror Office.
Oh, and? During this time, he may or may not have carried out a few jobs as Mr. Pink. Dude's sneakier than he looks, when he wants/has to be.
Just recently, Phil's cover was blown while he was investigating a prominent crime group (vague, ugh, but will leave it for now). Remaining in the U.S. would have meant DANGER! DANGER!, and the government wanted someone to keep an eye on Phil. They heard that Les Warts needed a DADA prof, and BAM; Phil had himself a job.
So that's more or less where he's coming from. On a few other notes... Phil is gifted with a knack for sliding out of tight situations and an intense set of survivalist instincts; when backed into a corner, he fights with an unexpected and often overwhelming fury. In general, he's... really pretty neurotic. He tries to play it cool, but has a hard time keeping still; excess of nervous energy, what? He isn't sure how much he cares about this job, and he may be looking for an occasion to slip away... or not.
As a professor, I... don't even know quite how he'll act. As long as the students don't mess with him/his belongings and more or less kind of do their work, they should be all right. He doesn't like kids, but he also doesn't have any reason to go after them. They're pretty much just there, as far as he's concerned. (We'll see about this, but for the time being, that's his stance.) Lessons will usually be practical, maybe at times be questionable, and may end in trips to the Healer. (In terms of book-land, he's likely to fall toward Moody's sort of classes, but with more !!!!!!!!!! and less aptitude in the teaching vein.)
At some point (likely in the near future), he's going to begin to suspect that the Les Warts position is the American government's way of knocking him off, and may or may not harbor concerns that each and every character is a potential assassin.
ALSO. Clearly this is a must-know... He's got weed, and he wouldn't be opposed to selling. And his middle name is Darcy. He will never, never tell anyone this.
Also, he comes off as kind of a dick with most people, even when he's actually being personable. Oops.
